Shivneri Fort: The Birthplace of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj
Before the thunder of hooves shook the Deccan plateau, before the saffron flag flew over Raigad, there was a small wooden cradle inside a hilltop fort — and in it lay the infant who would become a legend.

Shivneri Fort rises 1,067 metres above sea level, commanding sweeping views of the Sahyadri ranges. Built before the 13th century, the fort passed through the hands of the Nizamshahi Sultans of Ahmednagar before the Bhonsle clan gained residence. It was within these ancient walls, on 19 February 1630, that Jijabai gave birth to Shivaji Bhonsle — later Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.
The Fort's Strategic Design
Shivneri is a natural fortress. Its irregular hilltop shape forced builders to construct seven successive gates — locally known as the Saat Darwaje — that a besieging army would need to breach one by one. Visitors still climb through each of these gates today.
Inside the fort lies a perennial freshwater spring called Badami Talav, a small Shiva temple, and most significantly, the shrine of Shivai Devi — the goddess after whom Shivaji was named.
Jijabai and the Formation of a Legend
Jijabai, Shivaji's mother, spent years inside Shivneri. She is credited with instilling the ideals of Hindavi Swarajya — self-rule for the people — into her son from his earliest years. The fort thus became not just a birthplace but a classroom.
"The values Shivaji carried into battle were first learned not on a field, but in the arms of Jijabai within these walls." — Historian Govind Pansare
Shivneri is not merely a fort. It is the origin story of a nation — carved in basalt, held in memory.
