Pune Through Centuries

3rd Century BCE

Ancient Punya Vishaya

Copper plates from the Rashtrakuta dynasty mention 'Punaka Vishaya,' the earliest known reference to Pune as a settlement.

1600s

Rise of the Marathas

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj grew up in Pune. His mother Jijabai oversaw the construction of Lal Mahal, marking Pune's strategic importance.

1700s

The Peshwa Capital

Under the Peshwas, Pune became the de facto capital of the Maratha Confederacy. Grand structures like Shaniwar Wada were built.

British Conquest
