National War Museum Pune: Where India's Military History Lives
Seven acres. Vintage fighter jets. A tank that crossed the Himalayas. And the quiet dignity of a nation remembering its soldiers.
Category: Museums | Location: Southern Command, Pune Cantonment
Pune has been a military city since the British established their Southern Command headquarters here in the 19th century. That military heritage is preserved, memorably, in the National War Museum — spread across carefully maintained grounds at the Southern Command campus in Pune Cantonment.
The Collection
The museum's outdoor galleries contain an extraordinary range of decommissioned military hardware:
- PT-76 and Centurion tanks from the 1965 and 1971 India-Pakistan Wars
- Hawker Hunter and Gnat fighter jets — the aircraft that gave India air superiority during the 1971 war
- Field artillery pieces including the Bofors gun that featured in the Kargil conflict
- Naval guns and utility vehicles dating from the colonial era
Indoor galleries document the history of India's military campaigns through photographs, personal diaries, weapons, medals, and interactive displays.
The Hall of Fame
The museum's most moving section is the Hall of Fame — a curated documentation of individual acts of extraordinary courage by Indian soldiers. Each display is accompanied by personal photographs, letters, and the citation for the gallantry award received.
"These are not statistics. These are men with names, faces, and families."
The National War Museum is where history becomes human — and where a nation's gratitude to its soldiers takes concrete, tangible form.
