Parvati Hill rises abruptly from the flat expanse of Pune's western suburbs, its volcanic basalt plateau visible from much of the city. It has been a sacred site since antiquity, but took its current ceremonial form under Peshwa Balaji Baji Rao (Nana Saheb), who commissioned the temple complex in 1749.

Today the hilltop hosts five temples, a heritage museum, and the final resting places of two Peshwa rulers — making it simultaneously a pilgrimage site, a historical monument, and the finest viewpoint in central Pune.

The Five Temples

The Parvati complex comprises five shrines: the Parvati Temple (main goddess — Devdeveshwari), a Kartikeya Temple, a Ganesh Temple, a Vishnu Temple, and the Devdeveshwar Temple. Each is built in classic Hemadpanthi style — black stone, intricately carved, and designed to funnel spiritual focus upward.

The Parvati Museum at the base of the hill is housed in a former Peshwa guest palace and contains weapons, household objects, and paintings from the Maratha period.

The Peshwa Connection

Parvati Hill is where Peshwa Madhavrao I — arguably the most brilliant of all the Peshwas — is believed to have spent his final months. His samadhi (memorial) stands on the hilltop.

In 1818, when the Peshwa empire fell after the Battle of Khadki, Baji Rao II fled Pune. From this hilltop, he would have seen his armies retreat and his empire dissolve. The British then occupied the site briefly before returning it to Hindu trusteeship.

As the sun sets over Pune from the Parvati summit, the city glitters below — the same city the Peshwas once ruled, now transformed into something they could never have imagined.
