Lohagad — "Iron Fort" — stands at 1,033 metres near Lonavala, controlling the mountain pass between the Deccan Plateau and the Konkan coast. For centuries, whoever held Lohagad controlled the trade route — and the Marathas held it most successfully, using it as a treasury fort where Shivaji stored captured Mughal wealth after the famous Surat raid.
Today, it is Pune and Mumbai's favourite introductory fort trek — dramatic enough to feel significant, manageable enough for beginners.
The Vinchukata: The Scorpion's Tail
Lohagad's most distinctive feature — visible for miles — is the Vinchukata (Scorpion's Tail): a narrow, rocky spur that juts south from the main fort, resembling a curled scorpion's tail. Walking the Vinchukata during or after monsoon, with clouds forming around you and the valley 500 metres below, is one of the most theatrical natural experiences available within an hour of Pune.
By Train from Pune
Uniquely among Pune's major forts, Lohagad is train-accessible. The Malavli station on the Central Railway Mumbai-Pune route places you 4 km from the fort base — a pleasant walk or short auto ride.
Lohagad is where Pune sends its first-time trekkers. It creates addicts — most people who climb it once, climb it again.
