Rajgad Fort Trek: Shivaji's Most Beloved Capital
He ruled an empire from this mountaintop for 26 years. Now you can climb to where he sat — and understand, looking across the Sahyadris, why he never left.

Rajgad — "The King's Fort" — was the primary capital of the Maratha Empire for 26 years, from 1648 to 1674.Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj commanded his campaigns, received foreign emissaries, and administered a growing empire from this towering Sahyadri promontory in Velhe Taluka.
At 1,376 metres, with three separate machi (plateau regions) surrounding a central balekilla (citadel), it is one of the largest and most complex forts in Maharashtra.
The Structure of the Fort
Rajgad's three machi create a distinctive Y-shape when viewed from below:
- Suvela Machi — site of cannons, walls, and sunrise views across the Konkan scarp
- Padmavati Machi — contains a functioning temple and small settlement
- Sanjeevani Machi — the third arm, offering the most dramatic cliff edges
The Balekilla at the centre is the highest and most defensible position — where the royal palaces and water cisterns were built.
The Trek Experience
The main route begins from Pali village, motorable to the base via Nasrapur from Pune. The climb is sustained — approximately 1,200 steps cut into stone, passing through dense forest and rocky sections. The summit offers views of Torna Fort (which Shivaji captured first, at age 16), Sinhagad, and on clear days, the Konkan coast.
Camping on Padmavati Machi is a popular option — the experience of watching stars over the Sahyadri from a Maratha-era fortress is unforgettable.
Rajgad is not just a trek. It is a conversation with 17th-century Maharashtra — conducted in stone steps, battlements, and the kind of view that makes ambition feel possible.
